One Voice

I invite you to dream with me for a moment. How far can one voice go? How many people can an ordinary voice reach?

I think of this often. I think we can underestimate a lone voice. What if that lone voice is your voice?

I believe the answer is to the ends of the Earth. I also believe our voice can last long after we are gone. Sound unrealistic for an everyday Joe?

I wonder if Moses would believe that his voice would be read by millions of people long after his welcoming into heaven. Would Paul believe that the letters he sent to churches would still be circulating today? Would David believe his Psalms would still be inspiring people today? I wonder… and I dream…

I dream that my voice would be heard by people who are in need of encouragement. In all my encounters with people I pray that they see Christ in me. That by the words that I speak, they are intrigued and want to know more. I pray that my actions bring joy and that my life would speak volumes to those that believe that because they became ill, that they have lost their voice.

Our voice is more than the words that come out of our mouths. It is our actions, our attitudes, our presence, and so much more. I dream that how I live my life would be in a way that the Holy Spirit would bubble over from me and touch all those I am around. I think of this as steam. When steam is in the air it surrounds whoever is in the area. Everyone is touched by the steam. It just lightly surrounds them. They can’t help but know it’s there.

We think of the “big” names that preach the gospel or maybe of missionaries or those that write our Bible studies. But how far can a housewife’s voice carry? What about a manager of a business or a staff members voice go? How about someone who is chronically ill and confined to their house or hospital bed. Where does their voice carry to?

I believe that their voice can travel more miles than a plane can take them. I dream of the gospel not only being told through speech, written word, or song, but being shown by the actions of those least expected to make a statement.

I had the privilege of witnessing my grandmother at the age of 70+ years request to be baptized. I was present for that wonderful day. I also had the privilege of walking through cancer with her. I saw first-hand how someone who was facing a devasting diagnoses can speak louder through her actions than with her voice. She had the strength in that time in her life that I can only pray that I could have. She lived those last 14 months reflecting Christ and showing the Gospel at doctor’s appointments and treatments. She showed her immense love for her Heavenly Father until he took her while holding our pastor’s hand.

We do not need to have a big stage for our voice to be heard. We can have such a huge impact just by living our life. Here I am years after her death, remembering her voice and sharing it with you. I know that she would not believe that her story would be told to people today, but I can guarantee that she would have a great big smile to even be a little bit of an encouragement to others.

I dream of a world where stories like this are told for generations to come. Where all of us use all the different aspects of our voices. That no one feels small and insignificant. Where our experiences and actions are like steam and that they encourage all those around us. That our voices show those that do not know Christ that He is within us and shining though.

Wouldn’t it be amazing to touch even one life? To encourage one soul? No matter who we are or what season we are in our lives, we have a tremendous voice that can go further than our wildest dreams.

May we all be constantly dreaming of the distance of what we learn at the feet of Jesus can and will travel.
