In Matthew chapter 4 verses 1-11 Jesus is tempted by the devil. For every temptation Jesus responds with “for it is written”.
Jesus was tempted to question the goodness of His Father and the care He gives. Tempted to presume His Father’s protection and tempted with idolatry. Chris was tempted with many of the same things we are tempted with today.
Jesus responded with “it is written” each time He was tempted. By reading this account we see our Savior modeling how we should combat temptations. Jesus didn’t let the enemy twist scripture. Jesus had hidden the scriptures in His heart since He was a little boy. By the time Jesus was 12 He would have had most of the first 5 books of the Bible memorized. He knew God’s Word. He searched the scriptures He knew so well and corrected the enemy each time He was tempted.
What is our approach today when standing face to face with temptation? Our mode of attack should not be any different. We can model our Savior and use the scriptures.
On top of memorizing scripture there are many ways to locate scriptures to help you defend against temptation. Bibles, Bible apps, and the internet are all ways to locate specific scriptures, but remember your Christian family as well. You can draw on their years of knowledge and application as a follower of Christ. They will gladly walk with you and stand with you through whatever you are facing. They will pray for you and pray with you. They want more than anything for you to be successful in overcoming temptation and victorious in your Christ-likeness.
We will never be immune to temptation. It is through it and by it that we learn about ourselves and learn about God. We learn of our strengths and weaknesses. It is though fire that we are purified and molded into precious children of God that reflect our Savior so well.
